Frédérique Mahieu, master dry stone waller, wrote the text and founded the Espai de Pedra Seca, at the S'Hostal quarries, which are run by the cultural foundation, the Fundació Líthica. She combines dry stone walling with her work as an educator, taking part in congresses about Stone. She combines her technical, cultural and educational expertise with a commitment to highlighting the value of one of the island's home-grown traditional crafts. The Paris-based photographer, Laurence Toussaint turns her attention to the humble craft of dry stone walling. The craft brings a human element to the landscape and the stone itself, through structures by anonymous architects who have left a monumental imprint bearing witness to a unique identity and cultural tradition. Her lens captures the essence of a place to share it in an artistic, photographic act.
