  • The Mediterranean occupies a central place in Robert Graves's intellectual and creative universe. Bringing together fourteen essays by international scholars, this volume explores the many ways in which Mediterranean history, culture, landscape and myth shaped his work across a wide range of genres and disciplines. The essays examine Graves as poet, novelist, classicist, mythographer, biblical scholar, translator and gardener, highlighting the breadth of his engagement with the Mediterranean world. Particular attention is paid to his relationship with Mallorca, a place that became both a home and a lasting source of inspiration. By placing Graves in dialogue with writers and scholars ranging from Hesiod to Camilo José Cela, and from Sir Arthur Evans to Arnaldo Momigliano and Ronald Syme, the volume sheds light on key aspects of his thought and creativity. The contributors address questions such as the relationship between history and fiction, scholarship and imagination, the transmission of culture, and the reconstruction of the past. Taken together, these essays offer a new perspective on the Mediterranean dimensions of Graves's work and on the cultural, historical and intellectual contexts that informed one of the twentieth century's most versatile literary figures.
