It is generally accepted that finance can be divided into three areas: corporate finance, financial markets, and the study of firms that are inherently financial in nature (such as banking and insurance). In reality, however, the boundaries between these three areas are not always clearly defined, and the knowledge acquired in corporate finance forms the foundation for everything else; this book focuses on the latter. Corporate finance is fundamentally concerned with raising funds -whether equity or debt- and investing them in assets; hence, its two major decisions are financing and investment, as reflected in the book's subtitle. These are the primary topics addressed in this work: investment decisions and financing decisions. Together, they encapsulate everything essential about corporate finance -and indeed, finance in general. However, from a practical standpoint, it is often useful to make further distinctions by breaking the subject down into four areas: analysis, planning, investment (in the strict sense), and financing (in the strict sense)- an approach adopted by this book. In this way, the reader will be able to gain a clear overview of current financial theory and its applications, presented in an accessible manner and from a fundamentally business-oriented perspective, covering financial principles applicable to any company.
